SON—016: SKUNK

Skunk follows Liam, a neglected teenager growing up in a family where drugs and violence take center stage. His destructive home life is soon traded for a youth detention center that has its own set of rules and abuses. Even though he finds comfort in his caregivers, the past continues to haunt him.

Colin Van Eeckhout not only played a role in the successful Skunk, but also wrote a haunting soundtrack for the story with his band Amenra.

Listen to the soundtrack below:

It was quite an honour for us to compose some unique pieces of music for Koen Mortier. The ominous atmosphere in Skunk is something many people also find in our sound world. We had long hoped to one day be allowed to do something for film. However, we decided not to go for our usual instrumentation and work mainly with soundscapes to depict the imminent menace. In addition, we also bring some blissful moments of comforting beauty.

With Mass I, II and III, Amenra put themselves in the spotlight at the beginning of the millennium and of course I thought of them when I was filming my first-ever Ex Drummer. Even then, I thought Amenra were an animated bunch. Why I didn’t contact them at the same time is still not clear to me. Out of embarrassment, sloppiness? Really no idea. When I met Colin for the very first time and suggested he play dad in Skunk, he asked me pointedly: why didn’t you ask us for Ex Drummer? The ice was broken without too many words. Just before recording Skunk, I attended Amenra’s gig acoustically at the Bourla. An Eye Opener. And when they played “Song to the siren” by Tim Buckley, the song pierced my heart. For me, this was the song to accompany Skunk’s finale. In the end, it became a complete soundtrack: you would be happy from anything less.
